Vacancy: Structural Design Engineer

Job description

You will be responsible for scheme design and detail design of structures in steel, concrete, masonry and timber in accordance with BS, EN, and international codes. You will manage projects and as a team member on larger scale projects. You will liaise with CAD technicians to produce drawings that reflect design outputs, and work closely in partnership with Clients, Contractors and other members of the design team. You will attend Design / Client / Site meetings, and be responsible for site monitoring to ensure compliance with project specifications and best practice. You will be responsible for production of tender documents, specifications, risk assessments and structural reports. You will have a good understanding of geotechnical design, interpretation of SI reports and basic on-site analysis of ground conditions. Some overseas travel may be required.

Candidate specification

  • An honours degree in Structural Engineering or equivalent.
  • Applicants for this position should be working towards chartered status with a minimum of 2 years’ experience in a design office in preparing outline and detailed designs for structural engineering projects. The successful candidate will be required to obtain chartered status in due course.
  • Design experience in reinforced concrete, steelwork, masonry & timber.
  • A good working knowledge of the main software design packages
  • A detailed knowledge of the codes of practice – BS, EN and international codes.
  • A proactive approach to solving problems with an ability to adapt to changing scenarios
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Proven commitment to CPD
  • Own car essential

Structural engineers combine expertise with innovation to meet the challenge of design and deal with the design and construction of buildings, bridges and special structures. The aim is to design these structures safely, economically and elegantly. They form part of the team of professionals involved with construction projects and therefore work closely with architects, quantity surveyors and building services engineers as well as the client.

  • Undertaking technical and feasibility studies including site investigations
  • Using a range of computer packages for developing detailed designs
  • Undertaking complex and repetitive calculations
  • Liaising with clients and a variety of professionals including architects and subcontractors
